Is it Better to Have AWD or 4WD?

There are many AWD and 4WD systems that are designed to operate differently, but the primary difference between AWD vs. 4WD is that all-wheel drive is an automatic system and 4WD needs to be manually switched on. Most often, all-wheel-drive systems send engine torque to all four wheels at the same time automatically, whereas four-wheel drive is usually a part-time system that needs to be enabled by the driver.

Do I Need All-Wheel Drive?

Determining if you need all-wheel drive depends on the environment in which you drive and other lifestyle factors. If you live in a colder winter climate, like PA, it’s often helpful to have a vehicle with AWD for inclement weather. If, however, you typically stay home on icy days and want to maximize mpg ratings, a front-wheel drive vehicle might be a better fit. All-wheel drive is also great for people who want to tow a trailer or drive on rural unpaved roads.
